MENTORING TRAINING

Mentoring works in all settings, people, situations and purposes. In the workplace it is both a strategic intervention and an excellent support mechanism; in an academic setting it may serve the purpose of helping student to reduce academic stress and of encouraging quality teaching and research and in the community is one of the fastest growing social movements of our time as there are millions of volunteers the world over

making themselves available to help others.

Whether you are implementing a formal or informal mentoring programme, training your mentors and inducting your mentees is highly advisable. An effective mentoring relationship is one where both mentors and mentees have the core skills and the right kind of values to back them up.

APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY IN MENTORING

Appreciative Inquiry is a strategy for change based on the idea that focusing on what works within organisations, communities and individuals instead of what is not working, leads to a new and a better future.  Most of us came from the school that asserted that the first step in a development process is awareness of how bad things are.

AI affirm that we should not focus on changing people but on their generative powers.  It is easier to see the vision of the future when it has roots in past experiences. The course focuses on how to apply AI to mentoring to make change happen quicker and to generate more energy.

  • Why AI and why now? Underlying principles and trends

  • How it works and why it works

  • Appreciative Mentoring (deficiency vs appreciative)

  • What does it take to become an appreciative mentor

MENTORING VS SPONSORSHIP

Mentors can be at any level of the hierarchy within an organisation. They serve as role models, help navigate the company politics and make you focus on your personal/professional development.

Sponsors are senior managers with influence. They help you by giving you exposure to other senior executives; protect you from negative publicity; fight to get you promoted and make sure you are considered for developing opportunities.

The session will address:

  • When do you need mentoring, sponsorship or both

  • Are you over-mentored and under-sponsored?

  • What can you offer? (Sponsors don’t do it only for self-serving motives)

  • Mapping your network for targeting key people

  • Building and maintaining your network
